Reading the articles “Response to Intervention” (Mesmer and Mesmer, 2008) has given me a deep understanding of the ways in which to teach and assess literacy. I also learned about the complications that can come up when one teaches and assesses literacy and learned about various solutions to those problems. In the article, “Response to Intervention (RTI): What Teachers of Reading Need to Know” the RTI process is clearly defined. RTI was developed to address various issues and allow for early intervention. RTI is a method that includes assessment and ultimately immediate intervention so that the child can benefit. When using RTI approach students are screened and tested on their literacy skills 3 times a year. After receiving results students who need intervention are given small group instruction to work on their literacy skills.
