Week 14 #2
Reading the articles “Response
to Intervention” (Mesmer and Mesmer, 2008) has given me a deep understanding of
the ways in which to teach and assess literacy. I also learned about the
complications that can come up when one teaches and assesses literacy and
learned about various solutions to those problems.
In the article,
“Response to Intervention (RTI): What Teachers of Reading Need to Know” the RTI
process is clearly defined.
RTI was developed to address various issues and
allow for early intervention. RTI is a method that includes assessment and
ultimately immediate intervention so that the child can benefit. When using RTI
approach students are screened and tested on their literacy skills 3 times a
year. After receiving results students who need intervention are given small
group instruction to work on their literacy skills. The students’
progress is closely monitored and recorded until a team of professionals and
the parents of the students meet to discuss how to proceed. The RTI model has
proven to be an effective means of assessing and ultimately aiding struggling
students.
